Lunch Date with Rachel & Kate: Narrowing Down the Unexplained Wage Gap in Optometry

RESULTS FROM NEW OPTOMETRY GENDER WAGE GAP STUDY PUBLISHED IN OPTOMETRY AND VISION SCIENCE. This is big news! In our new research, we controlled for practice ownership, full-time status, and residency completion to calculate the gender wage gap for starting and current salaries by region and practice type. This newly published research is the most detailed compensation survey in optometry. For full-time optometrists who do not own a practice and did not complete a residency, men are paid 6.5% more than women in their first jobs after optometry school. Comparing non-starting optometry salaries, men make 13% more than women. In all regions and practice types, men were paid higher starting salaries than women. For current, non-starting salaries, men were paid higher in almost all regions and practice types. We dive into this new data, and talk about how it impacts us as optometrists, and what our next steps are!

Until Next Time,

Rachel & Kate
