What is decorin?
Decorin is found at high levels in the corneal stroma. It regulates cell proliferation, survival, and has previously been shown to inhibit scar formation and neovascularization in the cornea.
Why do we care about this?
Because a research team published a study showing that a gel-like eye drop containing decorin was able to significantly reduce corneal scarring in mice with pseudomonas ulcers.

Two weeks after this study was published, another study aimed at treating corneal scarring was published in Stem Cells Translational Medicine. It used a viscoelastic gel carrier to deliver mesenchymal stem cells to treat corneal scarring from chemical burns. Both studies show promising results in mouse models.
