This spring, the HBCU Light Intelligent Tour returns, bringing an interactive combination of virtual and in-person experiences to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This innovative educational initiative, organized by Transitions and Black EyeCare Perspective, aims to inspire and attract more Black and African American students to pursue careers in the field of optometry.

Black EyeCare Perspective has named Dr. Essence Johnson as the first Executive Director of the non-profit.  Dr. Johnson has served as the organization's Chief Visionary Officer and co-advises the Black EyeCare Perspective Pre-Optometry Club.  Dr. Johnson, who assumed her new role at the start of the new year, will manage the day-to-day operations for Black EyeCare Perspective, who has impacted the eyecare profession by creating new avenues to recruit, engage and influence the next generation of eyecare professionals .

“We are redefining the color of the eyecare industry, 1% at a time,” states Dr. Essence Johnson as a goal for her work in Black Eyecare Perspective. “I’m passionately pursuing my purpose,” she shares, and joining the Transitions Optical Diversity Advisory Board was a natural fit. The Diversity Advisory Board is a collection of doctors, patient consumers, and industry professionals that help better understand and execute on where the eyecare industry can make actionable change.
