What your patient might ask you…

Does vitamin D help my dry eye?

A new study published in Eye & Contact Lens found a link between vitamin D deficiency and dry eye.

The study details:
Thirty patients with vitamin D deficiency and 30 patients without vitamin D deficiency underwent complete eye exams with a thorough dry eye evaluation. Dry eye assessment included tear osmolarity measurement, tear break-up time (TBUT), Schirmer testing, and corneal NaFl staining score.

What did they find?
Patients with vitamin D deficiency showed significantly higher tear osmolarity levels, lower Schirmer scores, and lower TBUT values compared with controls.
