What your patient might ask you…

LipiFlow is too expensive, are there any other options?

Sure, let’s talk about iLux. Alcon just showcased this new device at SECO.

What is it?
It’s a handheld device (FDA approved in December 2017) that treats MGD by using light-based heat and manual compression. After the heat treatment, the provider manually expresses the blocked glands and can visualize the meibum expressed through a magnifier. The total treatment time takes about 8 minutes or less. Here is a picture and more details.

What about the clinical trial?
In a trial of 142 patients, it’s been reported that patients had similar outcomes with the iLux as compared to LipiFlow.

What else?
The cost. It’s roughly one-third the cost of LipiFlow. (via)
