Didn’t see any drusen? Look again.

study in JAMA Ophthalmology found that AMD was missed by primary eye care providers in almost 25% of patients.
Using patient data from EMR’s and color photos, over 600 patients were included in the study. They found that nearly 25% of patients listed as having normal macular health actually had AMD. Of note, 30% of those undiagnosed patients had large drusen that would benefit from a vitamin supplement.
Who exactly were the “primary eye care providers” in this study? It was both OD’s and OMD’s but there was no difference in the prevalence of undiagnosed AMD between the two providers.
