New Research from The Vision Council Explores Consumer Behavior in Q3 2026

The Vision Council has released its latest report, Consumer inSights Q3 2026, exploring consumer purchasing behavior surrounding major optical categories in the third quarter of 2026. The report draws on responses from over 12,000 U.S. adults and highlights current attitudes related to vision correction, managed vision care, eye exams, prescription eyewear, reading glasses, and non-prescription sunglasses.

Findings from this most recent quarter held relatively flat, extending the stability previously seen in Q2. Consumers moved toward the middle of the market in Q3, with buyers landing in the $100 to $199 range increasing this quarter, and those spending under $100 or over $200 on eyewear edging down. Where consumers shop continues to shape what they spend: in-person eyeglasses buyers reported a higher average out-of-pocket cost compared with those who purchased online.

“Consumers are showing steady, deliberate spending on eyewear, with more of them settling into mid-range purchases this quarter,” said Kris Stevens, Vice President of Research at The Vision Council. “The gap between online and in-person spending also tells us that the purchase channel continues to play a meaningful role in how much people invest in their vision.”

Highlights for Q3 2026:

  • 72% of consumers reported that they have managed vision care coverage, marking the highest level across the previous five quarters.
  • Gen Z and Millennials contributed to a large increase in eye exams in Q3, while Gen X reported the lowest exam rates.
  • 53% of online buyers purchased multiple pairs of eyewear compared to only 36% of in-person shoppers.
  • 13% of consumers with a recent eyewear purchase report buying smart eyewear, down three percentage points from the last quarter.
  • Those who have not made a recent eyewear purchase continue to attribute it to lack of need (44%) or extending the lifetime of current eyewear (37%).
  • More than half (59%) of respondents report spending less than $100 out-of-pocket on contact lenses, the highest share across the past five quarters.

The Consumer inSights Q3 2026 report is based on a survey of 12,099 U.S. adults aged 18 or older, fielded between July 29 and September 12, 2026. Respondents are representative of the U.S. adult population.

More than three full years of trended data, along with the complete report, are available in The Vision Council’s Research Download Center. This report, a $3,000 value, is available complimentary to members of The Vision Council; non-members may purchase it directly.
