In a study of 79 children, researchers asked the question, can we use OCT to diagnose increased intracranial pressure (ICP) in children?
The team measured the peripapillary RNFL with OCT and then compared it with the surgically obtained ICP, measured just minutes later. The study showed that the average RNFL thickness levels showed “a moderate sensitivity (89%) and specificity (62%) for detecting pathologically elevated CSF values”.
The take home:
In pediatric patients with suspected elevated ICP but no objective findings, OCT may offer an alternative method to measure elevated ICP rather than invasive testing or surgery.
