What your patient might ask you…

When can I get that glucose-sensing contact lens?

Not for a while.
A research team at Oregon State University is developing a bio-sensing contact lens.  It’s similar to the one Google proposed in 2014 but this research team believes they can make the biosensors in the contact lens entirely clear.  They describe the lens as one that can measure the glucose in tears, levels of urea to assess kidney function and maybe even protein levels relating to certain types of cancer. The hope is that the biosensors in the contacts can transmit important health info to your phone (i.e. “you’re blood sugar is too low – eat something!”).  However, it will be a year or more before it’s ready for animal testing.
