FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Optical Advancement grants are open to students pursuing careers as an optometrist or optician in the United States.

PINELLAS PARK, Fla., March 9, 2026 – To help support and empower the next generation of eye care professionals, Transitions Optical, in partnership with its Optical Advancement Board, is now accepting applications for the Transitions® Optical Advancement educational grant program until April 17, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Through the program, Transitions Optical will award:

  • Five $1,000 grants to graduating high school seniors who have been accepted into, or recent graduates currently enrolled in, an accredited opticianry school program in the U.S
  • Two $5,000 grants to first- through third-year optometry students enrolled in an accredited U.S. school or college

Grant Eligibility

All applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients.

“The future of eye care depends on a diverse, passionate pipeline of professionals who are committed to innovation, education and patient-centered care,” said Arlene Barringer, senior marketing manager, communications & analytics, Transitions Optical. “Through the Transitions® Optical Advancement grant program, we are proud to help remove financial barriers and invest in students who are eager to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and communities.”

Grant funds must be used to help offset expenses associated with pursuing a career in the optical industry, including exam fees, textbooks, tuition and other educational materials related to curriculum. In 2025, the program received 50 applications from students across the U.S., with grants awarded to aspiring optometrists and opticians to help reimburse critical education costs.

Before funds are distributed, grant recipients must submit proof that all funds were used towards qualifying educational expenses, such as tuition payments, exam fees or required course materials.

Applying for a Transitions® Optical Advancement Grant

Applications for the Optical Advancement optometry and opticianry grants are available online. All application materials must be submitted by April 17, 2026. Requirements include:

  • A headshot
  • A one-page letter of recommendation written in 2026 by a teacher or professor
  • An official copy of the applicant’s most recent high school or college transcript

    • How the applicant embodies Transitions’ values of innovation, service and education
    • Why inclusivity matters to the future of the optical industry and the impact the applicant hopes to make in improving better patient outcomes for all

The Transitions® Optical Advancement Board, composed of a diverse group of practicing optometrists, ophthalmologists and opticians, will serve as the judging committee for all grants.

Grant recipients will be publicly announced in May 2026. Applicants are encouraged to follow Transitions on social media for program updates and announcements.
