Want to avoid glaucoma? Drink tea.

study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology found that people “who consumed at least one cup of hot tea daily had a 74% decreased odds of having glaucoma compared with those who did not consume hot tea”.
The study used data collected from over 1600 patients between the years of 2005-2006.

What makes tea so great?

Tea contains phytochemicals and flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties.

Did it matter what kind of tea?
It did. The same effect was not shown with iced tea or decaffeinated tea. Caffeinated teas have greater antioxidant capacity compared with decaffeinated and iced teas which may explain the difference.

What about other types of caffeinated drinks?
The study also compared coffee and soft drinks but found no correlation.

The take home:
The authors state that although the study has limitations and further research is needed, hot tea consumption may play a role in the prevention of glaucoma.
