Can I get a stem cell transplant to help my AMD?

A new study published in Nature showed significant vision improvement in two patients with wet AMD that received a stem cell transplant. They both received an “RPE patch”, placed subretinally, that contained RPE stem cells.

How big is this patch?
It’s 40 microns thick and 4mm by 6mm wide.

How much did their vision improve?
The study showed a “visual acuity gain of 29 and 21 letters in the two patients, respectively, over 12 months”.

Are they going to do this on more people?
Yes, the research team has permission to test eight more recipients.
The authors said that although this is only an early trial, the results are promising and give hope to those suffering with AMD. (via)
