Scleral contact lenses are a powerful tool in the arsenal of the eye care provider and can produce life changing benefits for patients. Their ability to completely vault the cornea and create an artificial cornea-tear film interface allows the eye care provider to re-create an ideal ocular surface. These features make scleral lenses uniquely suited to treat patients with ocular surface disorders, corneal ectasias and ocular trauma. Sclearls also come with unique challenges that must be managed during the fitting process. Many diagnostic technologies and lens manufacturing technologies are continuously being developed to address these challenges. In this episode of VisionTECH we are joined by Dr. Melissa Barnett as we take a deep dive into the latest technologies in scleral lens fitting.
Dr. Barnett is the principal optometrist at the University of California, Davis Eye Center in Sacramento. She is an internationally recognized key opinion leader, specializing in anterior segment disease and specialty contact lenses. Dr. Barnett lectures and publishes extensively on topics including dry eye, anterior segment disease, contact lenses and creating a healthy balance between work and home life for women in optometry. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, a Diplomate of the American Board of Certification in Medical Optometry (ABCMO), a Fellow of the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) and serves on the Board of the American Optometric Association (AOA) Cornea and Contact Lens Council, Women in Optometry and (WO) Women of Vision (WOV), Gas Permeable Lens Institute (GPLI), Ocular Surface Society of Optometry (OSSO) and is Past President of The Scleral Lens Education Society (SLS).
