The study analyzed medical records from 2000-2015 and included over 56,000 diabetic patients aged 40 or older.
What did they find?
Diabetics are twice as likely to develop cataracts compared to the general population.
But that is probably just for older patients, right?
Nope. Patients with diabetes between 45 and 49 years of age were 4.6 times more likely to develop cataracts, and those with diabetes between 50 and 54 years of age were 5.7 times more at risk than their healthy counterparts.
Who was at highest risk?
Patients with significant diabetic maculopathy had a six times greater risk of developing cataracts. (via)
