Can you get Ebola in the eye?
Yes, but until recently, researchers were not totally sure how this travels to the eye.
A paper was published in JAMA Ophthalmology that examined 14 Ebola survivors with retinal manifestations. The lesions have a distinct appearance and an OCT of the larger lesions showed a collapse of the overlying retina. This corresponds to the visual field defects that respected the horizontal raphe.
What does all that mean?
The authors state these findings are consistent with a neuronal rather than a vascular pathogenesis.
